Because of the love for our Japanese Knife Collection this year we have searched high and low, looking for the resources and experts to help us sharpen our knives!

And we have found them! We are very excited to offer a Knife Sharpening Workshop to teach you the skills needed to sharpening your quality kitchen knives at home.

No more dull knives or shipping them off to get professionally sharpened. You can do this at home, saving you money and giving you the flexibility to sharpen your knives at any time.

With some guidance from our wonderful instructors you will leave this class with a sharp knife (please bring one of yours to practice on) and the hands-on experience to confidently sharpen your others at home.

What you will need:

- Bring your favorite knife

- 2 Whetstones (1000 & 3000 grit) or a combo stone of comparable grits (or you can choose the class option WITH STONE to purchase one of our combo stones at a great discount!)

- a safe way to transport your knife: thick cloth wrapped around blade, storage box or leather sheath, etc.

Where: This workshop will be hosted at Three Bales Home Supply. At this time this workshop is taught only in person, no online offerings available.

When: Tuesday, November 12th from 5:30 to 8 pm

Who: The instructors Travis Orr and Phallon Arthun are local makers in Missoula. And talk about the kindest, most genuine and knowledgeable humans around. We can't for you to meet them!

Travis Orr has been a carpenter for 14 years, getting his start in remodeling, and framing houses. As time went on his interest in finer work developed and he began making custom  furniture in 2021. Travis studied traditional hand tool woodworking in Japan with the master chair-maker Tak Yoshino as well as a whetstone sharpening course, at the base of Mt. Fuji in 2023. The commitment to quality and attention to detail that is essential to Japanese craftsmanship inspired Travis to bring those ideals back to the US. Travis’ approach to work is to focus on quality and the individuality of each piece. Too often wood is treated as a commodity and not as a unique natural element that is innately beautiful. We mass produce wooden items and force our will upon the wood without consideration for what the wood is best suited for. This leads to inferior furniture, contrived and clumsy designs and ultimately products that end up in the trash. Every piece that Travis builds focuses on the idea that it only needs to be purchased once, with the ability to be repaired and is only ever built with lasting materials, not veneers or epoxies and with non toxic finishes and glues.

GIFTCARDS and discount codes can not be redeemed for this workshop.
